The traditional purpose of Lent is the preparation of the body and soul —through prayer, penance, almsgiving, and self-denial.

It reminds us of the value of repentance; believing that giving something up for Lent is a way to attain God’s blessing. But the Bible teaches that grace cannot be earned.

Grace is “the gift of righteousness” (Romans 5:17).

Our compassion, generosity and selflessness will reveal true grace; “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” (Matthew 6:16-18) .

This is a time, from Ash Wednesday until Easter, to share; to come together in solidarity and truthfulness. Donating a little of our own comfort to produce all the needs for others.

As Father Pedro hopes, lent will bring us together, create the will to help one and other; the ones who are in desperate need. The donation of one’s  can change the world for all.
